LAND'S END JOHN O'GROATS
THE JOURNEY BEGINS 19 JUNE 2027
One 1948 Ferguson. Two very important causes. A £10,000 target.
This One Is Personal
Thirteen years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer and underwent a major operation and gruelling chemotherapy.
I was incredibly fortunate to come through that experience, and cancer remains something that has had a profound impact on our family.
More recently, Andy, an Army veteran who served with the Royal Signals, was diagnosed with PTSD, bringing another very personal connection to the work of Combat Stress.
These experiences have shaped our family and are at the heart of Putt Putt For a Purpose. We're taking Jimmy on this journey to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Combat Stress - two causes that mean an enormous amount to us.
It's going to be slow.
It's going to be noisy.
It may occasionally be held together by optimism and hope.
But it will make a difference.

Why We're Doing It
Cancer Research UK + Combat Stress
Putt Putt For a Purpose started with a hare-brained idea that, perhaps, sounded slightly more sensible before we thought about how far Land's End actually is from John O'Groats!
As a family, we've purchased a 1948 Ferguson tractor, with the aim of putting it to the ultimate test and taking it on a journey from the very south-west of mainland Britain to the far north of Scotland.
We're doing it to raise money for two causes that are hugely important to us: Cancer Research UK and Combat Stress.
Putt Putt For a Purpose is our way of turning our experiences into something more positive - raising money, raising awareness, creating memories and having an adventure with Jimmy along the way.
It will be slow. It will be noisy. It will probably involve a few mechanical dramas. But hopefully, with your support, it will also raise a worthwhile amount of money.
Meet Jimmy
Our 1948 Ferguson tractor - and the smallest member of the team with the biggest job.
Jimmy isn't just any old tractor. He's a 1948 Ferguson with a name that means a great deal to our family.
He is named in memory of my Grandfather, Jim, who was a farmer before joining the RAF prior to the Second World War. The name also has a special Royal Signals connection. "Jimmy" is the affectionate name given to the figure on the Royal Signals cap badge.
With Andy having served with the Royal Signals and our son now serving with the Corps, it seemed the perfect name for the little grey tractor taking us on this very big adventure.
Can a 1948 tractor really make it from Land's End to John O'Groats?

Jimmy during his restoration - a long way from ready for Land's End!

The Challenge
Land's End to John O'Groats. On a 1948 Ferguson tractor.
On 19 June 2027, we'll set off Land's End with one very ambitious little grey tractor and point him north.
The destination is John O'Groats. We'll travel the length of Britain at Jimmy's decidedly unhurried pace, raising money and awareness for Cancer Research UK and Combat Stress along the way.
It won't be fast. It probably won't go to plan. But that's rather the point.

One little grey tractor. One very long road.
Jimmy's Restoration
Jimmy’s journey didn’t begin at Land’s End — it began in the workshop. Our 1948 Ferguson tractor needed plenty of care, hard work and a fair bit of determination to get him ready for the road ahead. Here’s how Jimmy was brought back to life, one piece at a time.
